The first 787 was unveiled in July 2007, but its development has since been beset with technical glitches. The aircraft was originally scheduled to enter service in May 2008, but the project is now running two and a half years behind schedule. The plane is being assembled at Boeing’s Everett factory in Washington State, USA, but the decision to outsource much of the development work to external suppliers has left the project blighted by parts shortages and fitting errors. The first Dreamliners are scheduled to enter service later this year, but Boeing has admitted further glitches could see delivery slip into early 2011. The company recently halted flight tests on the first 787s after finding some had improperly installed parts in the horizontal stabiliser, a smaller wing on the aircraft's tail. The aircraft’s maiden flight, originally scheduled for August 2007, took off from Everett, Washington in December 2009. Since then the flight test program has undergone approximately 1,100 flight test hours. Boeing 787 Dreamliner (wallpaper 2). Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft images wallpaper gallery 2. The first plane ever to have a fuselage made entirely of carbon composite material, rather than aluminium sheets riveted together, the 787 is built for speed and efficiency. The one-piece fuselage will eliminate 1,500 aluminium sheets and around 50,000 fastners, while the use of carbon composites will make the plane lighter and more fuel efficient. Its Rolls-Royce and General Electric engines will emit 20 per cent less carbon dioxide than other planes of a similar size, Boeing has. The longest-range 787 variant can fly 8,000 to 8,500 nautical miles (14,800 to 15,700 km), enough to cover the Los Angeles to Bangkok or New York City to Taipei routes. Its maximum cruising speed is Mach 0.85 (561 miles per hour). Boeing currently has 860 Dreamliner orders on its books from customers in 56 countries, worth almost £100bn ($150bn). All Nippon Airways, the launch customer, has placed 55 orders, while the Australian airline Qantas has ordered 50 Dreamliners for its budget subsidiary Jetstar. ILFC, which leases aircraft to airlines worldwide, is the largest customer with a total order of 74 orders. Russia is reportedly pressing Boeing to deliver 787s to the state-run airline Aeroflot in time for the 2014 Olympics. Boeing has said it expects a “healthy increase” in orders following the Farnborough Airshow 2010. Boeing 787 Dreamliner (wallpaper 2). Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft images wallpaper gallery 2.
