Helicopter Aircraft. The Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-size utility helicopter. A helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by one or more engine driven rotors. In contrast with fixed-wing aircraft, this allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forwards, backwards and laterally. marketed for both civil and military use. Originally designed and built by Aérospatiale. Aérospatiale was a French aerospace manufacturer that built both civilian and military aircraft, rockets and satellites. It was originally known as Société Nationale d'Industrie Aérospatiale, it is an enlarged and re-engined version of the original Aérospatiale Puma. The Super Puma first flew on 13 September 1978. In 1974, Aérospatiale commenced development of a new medium transport helicopter based on its SA 330 Puma, announcing the project at the 1975 Paris Air Show. engines powering a four-bladed composite main rotor, and was designed to be withstand damage better, with a more robust fuselage structure, a new crashworthy undercarriage and the ability to withstand battle damage to the rotor blades and other key mechanical systems. It was fitted with a ventral fin under the tail a more streamlined nose compared with the SA 330, while from the start was planned to be available with two fuselage lengths, with a short fuselage version offering similar capacity to the SA 330, which gives better performance in "hot and high" conditions and a stretched version allowing more passengers to be carried when weight is less critical. A pre-production prototype, the SA 331, modified from a SA 330 airframe with Makila engines and a new gearbox, flew on 5 September 1977. The first prototype of the full Super Puma made its maiden flight on 13 September 1978, being followed by a further five prototypes. The type has proved immensely successful, chosen by 37 military forces around the world, and some 1,000 civil operators. The Super Puma has proved especially well-suited to the North Sea. The North Sea is a marginal, epeiric sea on the European continental shelf. The Dover Strait and the English Channel in the south and the Norwegian Sea in the north connect it to the Atlantic Ocean. It is more than long and wide, with an area of around. oil industry, where it is used to ferry personnel and equipment to and from oil platforms. In civilian configuration it can seat approximately 18 passengers and two crew, though since the early 2000s most oil companies have banned use of the middle-rear seat reducing effective capacity to 17+2. This down-rating is due to difficulties encountered in evacuating through the rear-most windows in crashes at sea. A wide variety of specialised military variants are in use, including dedicated Search and rescue. This is a list of aviation-related events from 1990:- Events :*Pan American World Airways and Trans World Airlines, both in financial difficulty, transfer their coveted landing rights at London Heathrow Airport to American Airlines and United Airlines.-January, military Super Pumas have been marketed as the AS532 Cougar. Helicopter Aircraft. The initial Super Puma's maiden flight took place in 1978. The system was fitted with the versatile Turbomeca turboshaft engines that drove a four-blade main rotor and traditional four-blade tail rotor. The system was crewed by either one or two personnel and could carry upwards of 29 personnel in the spacious cabin setting. Variants of the Super Puma have allowed the basic utilitarian airframe to undertake a variety of battlefield and peacetime roles. gun pods, rocket pods and missiles can all be fitted externally, seeing the Super Puma even in the anti-submarine warfare role. Pintle gun mounts can be placed at the cabin doors for additional security. In order to provide the capacity and performance necessary for increased aerial transport requirements, the Swiss Air Force had to procure medium size transport helicopters. In a first step, three Super Puma helicopters were introduced in 1987. With this, first experiences in the fields of operations and maintenance could be gathered and operational concepts were worked out. AS332 Super Puma (wallpaper 3)

The twin engine Super Puma is equipped for instrument flight and is suitable for many military and civilian purposes (e.g. disaster relief). In cases of emergency and crash-landings, the Super Puma is equipped with modern safety and security features providing better protection for the two pilots who fly it and for the passengers. With the ’98 armaments programme the procurement of an addi-tional 12 helicopters was realised. These are AS532 Cougars Eurocopter's new name for the military variant of the Super Puma. There are currently five main versions of the Super Puma, based on short and long fuselage variants. The AS.332B is the standard military version, which to date has been supplied to Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Chile and Spain, whilst the AS.332F is a naval variant armed with two Exocet missiles for antishipping duties. The civil equivalent of these two short fuselage variants is the AS.332C. The two stretched variants are the AS.332M military transport and the AS.332L civil version. The latter has become popular with offshore support operators, particularly in the North Sea where six major operators had the type in service at the beginning of 1984. This included 34 aircraft with Bristow Helicopters, redesignated Tigers to signify equipment differences from the standard AS.332L. Orders for 150 Super Pumas had been received by late 1983, including license-built aircraft being assembled by Nurtanio of Indonesia. AS332 Super Puma (wallpaper 3). Helicopter Aircraft. A cabin big enough to accommodate 24 passengers on standard seats is clearly big enough to earn- smaller numbers in much greater comfort. Aerospatiale has exploited the possibility in a big way, and claims to have created the market for VIP helicopters by combining the versatility of rotary-wing flight with the all the comforts of a business jet. The Prestige range of VIP interiors offers luxuriously upholstered seating in a single nine-seat cabin, or separate compartments with four seats forward and another eight aft, along with such amenities as a bar, individual video screens and telephones. Super Pumas and Cougars are used to transport no fewer than 25 heads of state, and more than 50 VIP versions are in service. Apart from the 8m long cabin, the type's attractions include low noise and vibration levels and large windows along with high performance and long range. AS332 Super Puma (wallpaper 2). Other roles have included supporting the United Nations peace-keeping force in Mozambique. The Super Puma is well suited to operations in Africa, where it is able to take off with full tanks even in temperatures of 30°C. The design of this derivative of the SA.330 Puma commenced in 1974 and the definitive prototype was preceded by a modified Puma, the AS.331, which flew in September 1977 with an uprated transmission driven by two Turbomeca Makila turboshafts. The first AS.332 flew on 13 September 1978 and introduced a number of further changes to improve payload, performance and survivability, and to reduce maintenance. These changes included a new energy-absorbing landing gear with increased wheel base and track, a lengthened nose section, more efficient fiberglass main and tail rotors, greater fuel capacity, and revised fin and tail plane contours to improve handling. Subsequently in 1980 a fourth prototype introduced a cabin stretch of 0.76m with two additional windows and accommodation for up to three more passengers. AS332 Super Puma (wallpaper 2).
