What’s it like to fly the L-39? It’s delightful. The flight control system is all-mechanical, with rod-actuated control surfaces, and the control feel is fairly heavy, but smooth and instantly responsive. Visibility is excellent in all directions. Aerobatics are easy and rewarding, and the L-39 is capable of all the basic positive-G jet maneuvers: aileron rolls, barrel rolls, loops, Cuban-8s, Immelmanns, cloverleafs, etc. Entry speed for most over-the-top maneuvers is 320-240 KIAS, and a 4-G loop takes approximately 4,000 feet of vertical space. Negative-Gs, for those so inclined, are limited to 10 seconds due to oil system limitations. In the positive-G realm, the bungee-boosted elevator begins to apply its compensation at about 2 Gs (actually, 18 degrees of stick deflection), and its effect becomes very noticeable by the time you reach approximately 4 Gs. It feels like someone is helping you pull on the stick. Aero L-39 Albatros (Wallpaper 4). 4. Photo wallpaper gallery of Aero L-39 Albatros high-performance jet trainer aircraft. 4. Stalls are conventional for a jet aircraft of this type, with a stall break that is not sharply defined, and does not result in the nose dropping. Instead, the stall is preceded by an easily identified low-frequency rumble that feels about the same regardless of landing gear or flap position. Wings-level stall speed ranges from 92 to 105 KIAS, depending on flap setting. The slow spool-up time of the engine (nominally 9-12 seconds from idle to full power) means that the stall recovery must be a finesse exercise. Rushing the process will almost always result in a secondary stall and a further loss of altitude. This is a very important concept to grasp, especially in the traffic pattern, and it’s why L-39 pilots-in-training should spend a lot of time doing stalls and exploring the lower edge of the speed envelope. The electrical equipment is powered by the main generator (9 kW) from an accumulator enabling autonomous operation. The electrical net includes inverters (115 V and 3x36 V). Radio equipment of the aircraft consists of radio, communication, radionavigation and identification devices. For the training of landing and approach, a RSBN-5S close navigation system and ILS landing system are used. The aircraft is also equipped with the RKL-41 radio compass, RV-5 radio altimeter, MRP-56PS marker and an identification device. Aero L-39 Albatros (Wallpaper 4). 4. The L-39 Albatross succeeds the L-29 Maya/Delfin. The L-39 basic and advanced jet trainer first flew on 4 November, 1968. They were followed by ten pre-production aircraft. It was the standard jet trainer for the Soviet Union, and Czechoslavakia from 1971 to 1973. The aircraft is the standard jet trainer for former Warsaw Pact countries. The L-39 was exported to 16 countries. The newest recipients of these aircraft are: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bulgaria, Cuba, Ethiopia, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Romania, Syria, and Vietnam. From 1971 to 1999 a total of 2921 units of L-39/59 family were delivered and unrivalled more than 4 million flight hours were flown at users all over the world. A contract for delivery of 12 new L-39C jet trainers was signed by Aero Vodochody in Sana´a, Yemen Republic capital, at the end of February 1999. The contract, which is result of several years intensive negotiations, covers also delivery of spare parts, logistics, pilot and ground crew training and service support. It is designed for initial and advanced training. Several modified and upgraded versions have been developed since 1968, known as L-39C, L-39V, L-39ZA, L-39MS and L-39ZO. A low-wing aircraft with tandem seating and a classic all-metal airframe, it is equipped with a three-point hydraulically operated retractable landing-gear. Trapezoidal wings have fuel tanks on their tips. The wing has double-slotted flaps with a takeoff deflection of 25° and landing deflection of 44°. The fuselage consists of two construction parts - the forward and the rear one. The rear fuselage and tail are removable. The electronic equipment and oxygen system are located in a dielectric nose cover. In L-39, the canopy of the cockpit is hinged to the right. In newer development types L-59 (originally L-39MS) and L-139 it is hinged hydraulically upwards to the rear. The power plant is an Al-25TL by-pass double-shaft turbojet engine with max. static thrust of 16.87 kN. The engine is started by a Saphire 5 single-shaft gas turbine. The types with maximum takeoff weight of 5,700 kg are equipped with a more powerful DV-2 engine with max. thrust of 21.57 kN. There is a classic mechanical control system with power transmission over levers and pull rods from both pilot posts. Aero L-39 Albatros (Wallpaper 3). 3. The L-39 Albatros is, by all estimates, the most popular jet warbird on the US market. Its sleek looks, reasonable operating costs, and ease of operation explain much of the allure of this Czechoslovakian beauty, but there are other factors which make it such a desirable airplane. Let's go flying and see what everyone's so excited about. The L-39 is a single-engine advanced trainer used by many of the world's air forces, and as such it has many of the design features and handling characteristics as the high-performance fighters that its students will one day fly. The cockpits are fully pressurized, heated and air-conditioned. Each of the tandem cockpits is equipped with enough flight controls, flight instruments, engine gauges, and system status indicators to allow either pilot to safely operate the airplane. As with most military jet trainers, the back seat was designed for instructors and, like many modern trainers, there is limited or no access to certain controls and switches in the rear "pit." In the L-39, these items include environmental controls, fuel pump switches, and the normal electrical controls. Also, the rear seat occupant cannot monitor the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) simultaneously with the front-seater. In actual practice, none of these factors is a problem. There are duplicates of the really important controls in the back (and who really needs all that stuff, anyway?) The back seater does, however, have a few unique items to himself: a fiendish array of levers and switches which allow him to fail the front-seater’s instruments at will -- a holdover from the airplane’s days as a military trainer. The L-39 features some relatively sophisticated systems, such as an automatic Ram Air Turbine (RAT) that pops out of the fuselage and powers the electrical buses in the event of a main generator failure or engine failure; a series of backup hydraulic accumulators and interconnect valves that allow you to extend the gear, flaps and speed brakes via emergency means; an emergency fuel control system; and even some backup controls for the environmental control system (ECS). The Aero L-39 Albatros is a high-performance jet trainer aircraft developed in Czechoslovakia to meet requirements for a "C-39" (C for cvičný – trainer) during the 1960s to replace the L-29 Delfín. It was the first of the second-generation jet trainers, and the first turbofan-powered trainer produced, and was later updated as the L-59 Super Albatros and as the L-139 (prototype L-39 with engine Garrett TFE731). The design is still produced in an evolved state as the L-159 ALCA, while more than 2,800 L-39s still serve with over 30 air forces around the world. The Albatros – the most widely used jet trainer in the world – is versatile, seeing duty in light-attack missions as well as in basic and advanced pilot training. The L-39 (under the name Prototype X-02) first flew on 4 November 1969 and was piloted by Rudolf Duchoň, the factory's test pilot. Serial production began in 1971. The design is Czechoslovak (Czech) – the construction of Aero's chief designer Jan Vlček. The L-39 Albatros is a widely flown trainer/light attack aircraft similar in mission to the Italian MB339. Until now is in service with various former Soviet allies. The low, slightly swept wing has a double-taper planform, 2½-deg dihedral from the roots, a relatively low aspect ratio, and 100 liter (26½ gal US) fuel tanks permanently attached to the wingtips. The trailing edge has double-slotted trailing edge flaps inboard of mass-balanced ailerons; the flaps are separated from the ailerons by small wing fences. The tall, swept vertical tail has an inset rudder. Variable-incidence horizontal stabilizers with inset elevators are mounted at the base of the rudder and over the exhaust nozzle. Side-by-side airbrakes are located under the fuselage ahead of the wing's leading edge. Flaps, landing gear, wheel brakes and air brakes are powered by a hydraulic system. Controls are pushrod-actuated and have electrically powered servo tabs on the ailerons and rudder. Operational g-force limits at 4,200 kg (9,259 lb) are +8/-4 g. A single turbofan engine, an Ivchenko AI-25TL (made in Soviet Union) is embedded in the fuselage and is fed through shoulder-mounted, semi-circular air intakes (fitted with splitter plates) just behind the cockpit; the engine exhausts below the tailplane. Five rubber bag fuel tanks are located in the fuselage behind the cockpit. The main, trailing-arm landing gear legs retract inward into wing bays; the nose gear retracts forward. A long, pointed nose made of aluminum leads back to the tandem cockpit, in which the student and instructor sit under individual canopies that are hinged on the right. The rear (instructor's) seat is raised slightly; both ejection seats are made by Aero. The basic trainer is not armed, but has two underwing pylons for drop tanks and practice weapons. Light-attack variants have four underwing hardpoints for ground attack stores; the ZA also has an underfuselage gun pod. This model is no longer in production and is replaced by the L-159.
